The Dallas Stars are a fascinating team to watch as we head towards the trade deadline. With every loss they start to look like a seller that will miss the postseason. Each win seems to propel them back into a playoff spot and perhaps into buy status this week.

They did just re-sign Joe Pavelski, showing they aren’t going to trade away all of their pending free agents. Recent reports would suggest they plan on keeping right defenceman John Klingberg as well.

This means they will surely lose Klingberg as a free agent since he has asked for a trade. They will have to replace the top four right defender next season, but why not do that right now and load up for a playoff run this season?

Where could they find a top four right defenceman who is signed through at least next season? Well, Jeff Petry is available. He also looks like that familiar Jeff Petry who plays a ton of minutes in all situations and shuts things down defensively while putting up decent scoring numbers as well.

Petry has asked for a trade to a team in the United States and if that remains his desire the Canadiens would like to get a really good prospect in return. The Stars are a perfect fit for Petry, and they have a ton of great prospects to offer.

Wyatt Johnston, Mavrik Bourque and Logan Stankoven would all be terrific adds for the Canadiens. But the best fit in a Petry trade would be defenceman Thomas Harley.

Harley was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft and would score 57 points in 59 OHL games the following season. He is a smooth skating, offensive minded left defenceman, and we all know the Canadiens need more offensive minded defenders on the team.

Harley has played most of the past two seasons in the AHL where he has scored 36 points in 65 games. The 20 year old has good size at 6’3″ and 205 pounds and he has been getting his feet wet at the NHL level this season, suiting up for 20 games for Dallas.

Harley has a ton of potential to be a sturdy, two-way defenceman at the NHL level and the Canadiens would be hitting a home run if they were able to land him via trade for an aging Petry who wants out of town.
