Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell expected to be playing college hockey at Harvard this season. When the Ivy League’s decided not to run a hockey schedule this year due to Covid-19, Farrell was forced to play one more season of Junior hockey.
And what a season it was.
Farrell returned to the Chicago Steel of the USHL, which is USA’s best Junior hockey circuit. He had led the league in assists in 2019-20 and finished in the top ten in points, so a big year was expected in 2020-21.
The Canadiens fourth round draft pick in 2020 did not disappoint. He dominated the USHL, finishing the year as the league’s leading scorer with 101 points in 53 games, just the second time in league history that a player topped the 100 point plateau. The Hopkinton, Massachusetts native piled up 72 assists on the season, which would have been enough to place him second in the league in points, even if he hadn’t scored any of his 29 goals, which were good for fifth in the USHL.
Though there wasn’t much doubt, Farrell was officially named the USHL’s Player of the Year earlier today. Finishing with 16 more points than anyone else in the league pretty much cemented that status long ago.
Farrell also added two goals and eight assists for ten points in eight postseason games, helping lead the Chicago Steel to a Clark Cup Title.
As his numbers clearly suggest, the 19 year old left winger is an incredibly talented player with the puck and possesses vision and playmaking abilities like few players his age. He tore up the USHL from day one of the season and couldn’t be stopped until his team hoisted the championship trophy.
He even set a few records along the way for assists and points in single season.
Farrell will now head to Harvard for his freshman season next year. With things returning to normal in the hockey world, he should play a regular college schedule in 2021-22 and show his terrific passing ability on a bigger stage.
