Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell is piling up some eye-popping numbers this season.

The 19 year old Hopkinton, Massachusetts native is a terrific playmaking centre that has been dominating the USHL.

Farell was a fourth round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2020 NHL Draft, a pick that earned some immediate praise for Cole Caufield who called it a steal.

Farell is doing everything he can to prove his old pal Caufield correct. Though he was taken with the 124th overall pick in the most recent draft, he is starting to climb the Canadiens top prospects list pretty quickly.

He had a great season last year for the Chicago Steel in the USHL, which is what caught the Canadiens eye. However, this season has been next level.

He started the year with ten points in five games, a pace that shouldn’t be easy to keep. Farrell hasn’t quite kept up to that two points per game pace but he is staying awfully close.

The Habs prospect leads the USHL with 62 assists and has 90 points in 49 games. While that’s not quite two points per game, it’s pretty darn close. It’s not like this is a ridiculously high scoring league either, as he is completely running away with the league lead in assists and is comfortably leading the entire league in points.

The second leading scorer in the league is ten points back of Farrell and his 62 assists almost double the next highest in the league. Mason Lohrei is second in the USHL in helpers with 38, just 24 back of the Habs pick.

Farrell was expected to have a great year as he should have been playing college hockey this season. When the Ivy Leagues decide to take the year off from competition, Farrell delayed his start at Harvard to play one more year in the United States top Junior league.

He was expected to be really good, but he has already broken the record for most assists in a season and he has a handful more games to play.

Farrell had an assist in 11 consecutive games heading into last night’s contest.

Many people expected him to have a great season after scoring 56 points in 44 games last season, but he wouldn’t have fallen to the 124th overall selection if anyone thought he was ready to go out and score nearly two points per game in the USA’s best Junior league.

Heading to Harvard next season will be a big jump for Farrell, but he literally couldn’t have done anything more to prepare himself.
