Timeline

Newly appointed team captain Shea Weber was brought up as well. Two offseason surgeries have held his season debut back until December, and Bergevin emphasized that the timeline hasn’t changed there.

He also mentioned how the Montreal Canadiens aren’t going to rush him back to the lineup. Again, that also makes sense. The team is winning without him now, and the blueline is getting good minutes from both the veterans and the young players earning larger roles. Noah Juulsen sat out of Saturday’s game against the Bruins but considering he told media he’d play if it were the playoffs, it’s probably not too serious.

Another positive of not rushing Weber back is it gives the Habs more time. Injuries are saving them from having to make decisions to remain within the 23-man roster limit. Jacob de La Rose was the odd-man out in favour of a returning Nicolas Deslauriers and was claimed by the Detroit Red Wings.

Handling David Schlemko shouldn’t be too difficult as he’ll likely be traded or placed on waivers if a team doesn’t want to take on the contract. Weber’s return will cause some shifts.

If he remains on track, Bergevin has another five weeks or so to figure out a solution. Perhaps it’ll come down to moving Karl Alzner or removing another forward from the roster. Either way, the day Habs fans get to see Weber on the ice again with the C on his sweater will be a good one.
