We rarely bring it up, but Jonathan Drouin is in a pretty bad slump with the Montreal Canadiens, and there’s a single stat that makes it look even worse.

If you clear your mind for a second and think about the current Montreal Canadiens situation, there are a few names that will instantly come up. To be honest, the first name will be Marc Bergevin, and Claude Julien may be a close second, so let’s keep this players only. You probably thought of Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk, maybe even Jordie Benn.

Pacioretty and Galchenyuk make sense. The captain hasn’t looked his best in a few of the Habs’ recent losses. When it comes to Galchenyuk, he’s gone 11 games without a goal. The 23-year old has managed four assists in that time frame, and some have been unreal, but him not scoring is a problem. A player who doesn’t get much criticism, at least from what I’ve seen, is Jonathan Drouin.

Be completely honest with yourself; there is a reluctance to point him out negatively. Not even now, but there were some careless plays Drouin would make, and no one would spend too much time on it. He isn’t even brought up much in the latest slump he’s in now.

Habsfan vs. Leafsfan is an affiliate of ours on the podcasting side of things, and they had a funny but accurate sketch of how Montreal views Drouin.

Unfortunately, it’s more than his faceoff success (which has fallen to 39.6%…). There’s a stat that’s even worse when you think about what Drouin’s role on the Montreal Canadiens was supposed to be.

No Goals

More from Editorials

Drouin has scored only one goal in his last 15 games. In comparison, Galchenyuk has three in that same time frame, it’s not that much better, but you get my point. He has as many goals on the season as Tomas Plekanec, Phillip Danault, and Joseph Morrow. The first two are defensive players while Morrow is a defenceman!

I may be off base here considering Drouin is third on the team in points with 13. Another defence I’ve seen is that the Quebec native is more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. That’s 100% true. Hence the team lead in assists (10).

At the same time, Drouin can still put up goals even though it’s not his specialty. He potted in 21 last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning last year, and you would like to think he could bring similar production.

Everyone on the team needs to start scoring more. Brendan Gallagher can’t be responsible for taking care of that area of the game every night. At the same time, we need to be fairer in our assessment of all the players on the Habs.

Drouin is a fan favourite and has been even before he stepped on the ice wearing a Montreal Canadiens sweater. He along with the rest of the leadership group needs to set an example. We’ve seen him score some beauties before. Hopefully, he does it again soon.
