Whenever you pass one of the Richard brothers for a record, you are in elite company. Lane Hutson recorded his 136th career assist in the Montreal Canadiens’ 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars, passing Henri Richard for the most before turning 23. Since entering the league, all Hutson has done is rewrite the Canadiens' record books, accomplishing things few defencemen have at his age.
HISTORY FOR HUTSON!!! 🍎

Hutson's ability to generate offence from the blueline this early in his career is unlike anything we have ever seen in a Canadiens sweater. He already owns the franchise records for most single-season assists (60) and points (66) by a rookie defenceman. With over 100 days remaining until his 23rd birthday, Hutson has plenty of time to extend his record and set a benchmark that could stand for decades.
Hutson caps off road trip with historic milestone
The Canadiens have had an up-and-down start to the season, but their defence has stepped up when they needed it most. It only got more difficult for Montreal as they had to go on their four-game road trip without captain Nick Suzuki, who picked up an upper-body injury against the San Jose Sharks. With the offence down two of their most crucial members in Suzuki and Ivan Demidov, the defence had to pick up the slack, and that trend continued against the Stars.
Through the first three games of the road trip, Canadiens defencemen combined for nine points. They added five more in Dallas. Alexandre Carrier, Adam Engstrom and Noah Dobson (two) all recorded assists in the 5-2 win, but it was Hutson's helper that drew the headlines.
Hutson broke out the puck from behind his net before passing it to Dobson, who carried it out of the defensive zone. Dobson sent a stretch pass to Alex Newhook, who was speeding down the ice. He moved the puck to his backhand before sliding it past Jake Oettinger, giving the Canadiens a 2-1 lead. It might have been Hutson’s easiest assist of the season, but they all count the same. With that one, he passed the “Pocket Rocket” for the most before turning 23.
Hutson's historic start puts him in rare company
The Canadiens have a long list of great offensive defencemen, but none have produced at the level Hutson has through their first couple of NHL seasons. Larry Robinson, who has the most points by a defenceman in Canadiens history, did not reach the single-season 60-point mark until his third NHL season. P.K. Subban, who was one of the more exciting and energetic defencemen in Canadiens history, hit the 60-point mark just once in his career. What Hutson is doing this early in his career is unprecedented, even for a franchise as historic as the Canadiens.
Hutson has a career points-per-game average of 0.88, which is the highest mark for a defenceman in franchise history for players who have played a minimum of 100 games. He is still a long way from passing Robinson for the most points by a defenceman in Canadiens history, but his first few seasons have already put him on a path very few players have followed.
