The Montreal Canadiens had a sale on defensemen over the past eight months. They had too many blueliners who couldn't find a spot in the lineup, so they traded Johnathan Kovacevic, Jordan Harris, and Justin Barron. They did get Alexandre Carrier back in the Barron deal. Still, one depth defenseman who stayed around was Jayden Struble, a reliable blueliner who can slot in wherever needed.
Struble serves as a perfect insurance policy for the Canadiens. He stepped in when Arber Xhekaj needed some time in the press box early in the season. Then, Kaiden Guhle and Barron suffered an injury, so Struble played a massive role in the top four and performed well. Struble didn't get much chance in the lineup for a couple of weeks since Carrier joined the team, which the Canadiens aren't unhappy about.
Kent Hughes recently sent Struble to the Laval Rocket for a conditioning stint. He hadn't played in a game since January 10, and the team wanted to keep him in game shape while waiting for another opportunity. It is a slight setback for Struble, who wants to be in the lineup full-time. However, the Canadiens aren't upset that it has come to this.
"We're not practicing a lot up there and I'm not playing, so it's tough staying in shape and game ready. I was presented (with the idea) and I love the guys here. I love the team and it's good hockey. I'm just excited to get back in playing shape. It was a no brainer."Jayden Struble
Struble's lack of an opportunity means that Xhekaj has found his footing as a regular defenseman. It also means that Guhle has been able to stay healthy, Lane Hutson hasn't needed any nights off, and the team also hasn't felt a need to sell UFAs like Mike Matheson and David Savard. It's a result that few expected heading into this season, as the team's depth at the position was clear but it was unknown which players would step into the top six.
Martin St. Louis' ability to put the same six defensemen on the ice every night is a good sign for the team's future and a perfect growth opportunity for the group. Struble could get his opportunity if the Canadiens do trade one of Matheson or Savard, but for now, Hughes will take a couple games in Laval for the 23-year-old.
