Why would the Habs be interested in this trade? Essentially, this would be a longer term gamble. The Canadiens are likely to look to trade Evgeni Dadonov at the upcoming trade deadline, as he is in the last year of his contract. Tyler Myers has two years left on his deal, so the Habs would be taking on Myers to eat minutes on the right side of the blue line during the rebuild.

They would also be gambling that Myers is worth more on the trade market at the 2024 trade deadline than Dadonov is at the 2023 trade deadline. He is an enormous right show defender, so that probably would work out.

Why would the Canucks be interested in this trade? To get out of the extra year on Myers contract. He hasn’t really lived up to his monster contract with the team and they could use the extra cap space in 2023-24. Dadonov could also fit on a third line and help out on the power play, adding a little more scoring depth to the wings.

Salary cap implications: Dadonov has one year left with a cap hit of $5 million and Myers has two years left with a cap hit of $6 million. So, the Canadiens are taking on an extra million in the 2022-23 season and an extra $6 million the following season.
