To say that Brendan Gallagher had a down season in 2021-22 is an understatement. The Montreal Canadiens veteran began his new contract with a weak firecracker pop rather than a loud bang.

In an interview on the excellent new TSN 690 show Campbell vs Gallo, Gallagher admitted that his body finally let him down last season. The grind of playing in the playoff bubble and the condensed schedules took a toll given his physical style and with the injuries piling on, he simply couldn’t keep up.

Gallagher has mentioned during the interview that he already feels better now than he did at training camp. He has incredible support regarding his training and feels like his strength has returned and that he has finally healed all the lingering injuries that have been bugging him the last few seasons.

It was beyond obvious that the 30 year old forward was going through his share of physical pain in recent seasons. Regardless, the two time 30 goal scorer was receiving his fair share of criticism, especially now that he has finished the first of a six year contract that averages a $6.5 million cap hit, along with an actual salary that ranges from four to nine million annually.

We have seen certain changes to Gallagher’s game at the end of last season, though. Number 11 seems to be crashing the net less erratically and in more specific situations. This has led him to create more opportunities not just for himself but for his teammates as well. Playing a more intelligent game will be key if Gallagher will want to be able to play in the NHL until the end of his contract.

Mitch Gallo and Sean Campbell also spoke about the Canadiens’ captaincy, an obvious hot topic in Montreal.

Like a true leader, Gallagher mentioned that the team will be in good hands regardless of who the captain is.
