Suddenly, there seems to be a mini Jeff Petry sweepstakes. The Montreal Canadiens defenceman who requested a trade out of Montreal this past winter was at one point at the lowest value of his career, but it seems that suddenly, there are a more than a few teams not only willing to take on the veteran defenceman, but on the entirety of his contract as well.

Sources are floating around the insiders and a few have confirmed to yours truly that the usual suspects are back in the Jeff Petry race. As has been covered this past winter, the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars are rumored to be the front runners.

There were also rumblings that the Pittsburgh Penguins would look at Petry as an option if contract talks with pending free agent Kristopher Letang would fail.

The Philadelphia Flyers were also rumored to have had a deal in place for Petry in return for winger James Van Riemsdyk at the trade deadline, but cap restraints made things complicated and both teams nixed the idea.

With the hiring of John Tortorella, Cliff Fletcher is rumored to to be interested in revisiting this deal and is said to be looking at ways to make the Flyers better before examining the idea of a rebuild.
