An interesting bit of news discreetly made its way to the podcast waves that may or may not have an impact on the selection of the next captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

According to Martin Leclerc of Radio-Canada Sports, Dominique Ducharme and Marc Bergevin held Corey Perry in extremely high regards at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. Of course, so did the rest of the locker room as Corey Perry was one of the inspiring leaders that paved the way for the Canadiens’ improbable run to the Stanley Cup finals that season.

It seems however that once the summer was concluded, Perry’s agent, Patrick Morris, did in fact sit down with Marc Bergevin and discussed a contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens.

That’s when the beans were apparently spilled. Shea Weber had already knew that his career was all but over and the Canadiens had to make a decision regarding a captain. That’s when Dominique Ducharme also came in and said that he wanted Corey Perry to be the next captain until one of the younger players was groomed and ready to take over the torch.

We all know what the end result ended up being. Perry signed a two year $2 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning and at the time of this writing is battling the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

How far up does the nomination of a captain go in an organization as prestigious as the Montreal Canadiens? Does Geoff Molson have a say in this? Because if you look at the situation, there’s no one left from the old administration to push for a “transition” captain unless that’s what Molson would want.

With the rebuild underway, the first overall pick staring right at us and a few really interesting NHL ready youngsters eager to leave their mark, everything still points towards Nick Suzuki being named the next captain before the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
