After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pro-Am Gagné-Bergeron Classic is making its return at the Centre Videotron on August 9th.

The Classic, entering its 12th event, is an annual charity event that was originally set up in 2009 by former NHLer Simon Gagné and current Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, who’s playing future is still up in the air.

The goal of the game is to raise funds for four different charities that help sick children, those with handicaps and those that come from poor families. The foundations are Le Pignon Bleu, Leucan, The Phillipe Boucher Foundation and The Maurice Tanguay Foundation For Children With Particular Needs.

The return this year is going to be a star studded affair and a few surprising names have already been included in the lineup.

Other than Gagné and Bergeron, Montreal Canadiens David Savard and Samuel Montembeault have confirmed their presence for the game. This is especially good news regarding Montembeault as he is currently rehabbing after wrist surgery.

Vincent Lecavalier will also lace the skates once again for the event. Want some more random names? Jack Eicher and Charlie McAvoy will be there also.

Other names confirmed are a plethora of Quebecers that include Jonathan Huberdeau, Thomas Chabot, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Phillip Danault, Alexi Lafreniere, Yanni Gourde, Jonathan Marchessault, Nicolas Roy, Alex Chiasson, William Carrier and Mathieu Joseph.

The goal is to regroup 24 players for the event. 18 have confirmed thus far while others, including Marc-Andre Fleury, have expressed interest and are a possibility for the event.

The event is set to start with a tailgate party that includes games, food, beverages and entertainment for the whole family. The warm up period will feature teams from Pre-Novice, Novice and Atom levels (essentially kids 10 years and under). They will have exclusive access to NHL players in the dressing room as well as the opportunity to hit the ice with them during the warmups.

A concert featuring Jonathan Roy, son of legendary goaltender Patrick Roy, is scheduled between the second and third period. Nearly $2 million has been collected and distributed to the four charities since the inaugural event.
