Max Domi

The Canadiens made a very surprising trade when they dealt Alex Galchenyuk to the Arizona Coyotes for Max Domi. Galchenyuk was the team’s third overall pick from the 2012 NHL Draft and had shown some promise during his stint with the team.

He even had a 30 goal season and many fans believed he could return to that level if he were able to play centre with decent linemates for an entire season. Then, he was dealt for Domi who had scored just eight goals the previous season.

Then, Domi exploded for 28 goals and 72 points in his first season with the Canadiens, while Galchenyuk struggled in Arizona and has bounced all around the league since.

Domi of course, was also traded, in a deal to land Josh Anderson after scoring 44 points in his second season with the Habs. The relationship certainly soured in Montreal, but by all accounts it was between Domi and the team’s head coach and general manager (at the time) that didn’t get along. Domi certainly soaked up every minute of being a Canadiens player and appeared to love playing in the hockey mad city.

Now, he is in the final year of his contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and is going to be a free agent this offseason. He has nine goals and 28 points in 47 games this season.

Domi is just 27 years old, plays a gritty fierce style and has plenty of skill. His offence is down a bit from his time with the Habs so he would come cheaper than the $5.3 million he is earning right now.

The Canadiens will be looking to fill roster holes in the offseason, and Domi could be a good fit here once again. It would give the team some flexibility in the top nine forward group, as Domi could fit on a top line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, or play on a second line with his buddy Jonathan Drouin, or slide down to a gritty third line with scoring punch alongside Brendan Gallagher and Ryan Poehling possibly.
