Having Jeff Petry on this list might come as a surprise. This is a player who previously publicly requested a trade and literally quit on his team. Everything has been said about pre-Ducharme Petry. Post-Ducharme shows the Petry that we have come to like in Montreal and this is one of the reasons why trading him might be difficult.

Does he or does he not want to play here? Because if he does, he’s a great asset to have. If he doesn’t well there are 31 other teams that you can choose from.

The other issue is of course the business side of hockey and that’s his contract. Petry, who turned 34 this past December, has 3 years remaining on his contract at a $6.25 million. Not chump change by all means and given the term left, the Canadiens won’t want to retain any salary.

Further complicating things is the no trade clause on his contract. In order to trade Petry, the player in question will have to submit a list of 15 teams he does not want to be traded to.

The contract as well as his antics at the beginning of the season probably hurts Petry’s value. He would probably have to keep playing hard and show that he’s remorseful of his actions and is in fact a productive team player.

Unless a surprise team makes an offer Kent Hughes cannot refuse, Petry will remain a Montreal Canadien once the trade deadline has past. If he does move, it will be this summer.
