While the previous five candidates are interesting, let’s not immediately dismiss the current assistants for the associate job.

Luke Richardson has shown flashes of being able to one day become a head coach as he took over the coaching duties for a few games in last year’s playoffs when Dominique Ducharme was sent home under COVID-19 protocol.

Alex Burrows has quickly jumped from the AHL to the NHL as a coach and his passion for the game will likely put him on many shortlists to fill assistant or associate coaches vacancies.

Trevor Letowski is also not without experience. Prior to accepting an assistant job in Montreal he had spent 11 seasons in the OHL in all the imaginable roles including assistant, associate and head coach of the Sarnia Sting and Windsor Spitfires. Letowski definitely had a feel and want for coaching after immediately accepting the offer to become assistant coach of the Sarnia Sting in 2010-11, right after hanging his skates up after playing for Astana Barys of the KHL after the 2009-10 season.
