Joshua Roy Draft Pick

The 2021 NHL Draft saw the Habs picking lower than they ever have with a first round pick. Their run to the Stanley Cup Final was terrific, but the only downside to a long playoff run is a long wait at the NHL Draft.

Any team would be okay with that, and Bergevin then fumbled the pick about as bad as possible by selecting Logan Mailloux who had asked not to be selected at all. Thankfully, Bergevin made up for it with an amazing pick later in the draft.

The Canadiens used their fifth round pick to select Joshua Roy. The Quebec native had shown plenty of skill and promise in the past, but he was knocked down the draft order for his questionable attitude and work ethic.

It seems like he has everything running smoothly this season. After a more focused offseason on diet and workout regimen, Roy has been one of the best players in the QMJHL this season.

The 18 year old was leading the league in scoring when he headed to Calgary for the World Junior selection camp. He had scored 17 goals and 47 points in 27 games for the Sherbrooke Phoenix who are among the top ten teams in the Canadian Hockey League according to the most recent rankings.

Roy is a big part of that as he has shown a terrific work ethic as well as incredible skill on a nightly basis. He is scoring just shy of two points per game by combining exceptional vision and playmaking abilities with a great shot as well. The shot was always on display as he scored 22 goals in 35 games last season, but he only had 13 assists in 35 games. This year, he already has 30 helpers in eight less contests.

While Bergevin drew a lot of criticism for his first round pick at the 2021 NHL Draft, he will get credit for many more years for using one of his very last picks as the Canadiens general manager on Joshua Roy.
