Samuel Girard

The Montreal Canadiens have a need for an offensive centre, but an offensive defenceman would be even better. Especially if that defenceman can play top four minutes reliably and plays the left side.

Right now, the Habs top options on the left side (when healthy) are Joel Edmundson and Ben Chiarot. They are pretty much clones on the ice as they both are big, physical and defensive minded while having the ability to eat minutes without much happening in the defensive zone.

The problem is, often not much happens in the offensive zone when they are on the ice either. An offensive left defenceman in the top four would be ideal.

They aren’t easy to acquire but it sounds like maybe the Colorado Avalanche are willing to part with Samuel Girard in the right deal. The right deal in this case would mean a really good top six winger going to Colorado to replace the offence lost when Brandon Saad left town in free agency.

The Habs are so desperate for exactly what Sam Girard brings that they should be looking to move just about any winger to get Girard, a native of Quebec, and a defender that has nine points in ten games this season and is locked up for five more years at $5 million per season.
