The Montreal Canadiens are now 0-5-0 to start the season and no one is happier than the Carolina Hurricanes’ social media team.

Since yesterday, their Twitter account and all the fans that weren’t Hurricanes fans five years ago, went on a tirade against the bleu-blanc-rouge.

Of course they had to flaunt their linguistic skills as well. Going as far as adding the quote to their bio on the main page as well.

And not one, not two, not three, but FOUR tweets about Kotkaniemi scoring.

What really takes the cake however, is this.

At the moment of writing this article, the site has been taken down. However once the game was over, a video of Sebastian Aho confirming that the Canadiens did indeed lose in his native Finnish was posted. Alongside was a 24 hour promo $20 t-shirt sale of Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Sebastian Aho with the promo code: Oui.

Every single post has been calculated in order to sting the Canadiens organization at every turn. Never have I seen such play over an RFA offer sheet. Then again, I guess the Hurricanes really want to be known as A Bunch of Jerks.

Our own Ken MacMillan was also a victim of the Twitter flame war. A Winning Habit’s twitter account was flooded by Hurricanes “fans” after his article about Kotkaniemi playing the last game on the 4th line was posted. Ironically, it was only two days AFTER the article was posted, when the news became irrelevant and Kotkaniemi was then promoted to the first line with Aho and Teuroveinen, did the fans start blasting the author for misinformation and trying to stir the pot.

The result was ugly and certain replies had to be deleted because they contained personal attacks on his family.

We love friendly social media wars and yes what the Carolina Hurricanes are doing is excessive but it’s all in jest and it motivates the players. Where the line is crossed is when people are hurling senseless and personal insults after only reading an article title. In the end, it’s just hockey. Let’s play nice.

Sure does make you miss the Hartford Whalers though.
