The Montreal Canadiens have placed two of their most recent acquisitions on waivers with the intent of sending them to their taxi squad.
It has been a newsworthy day for the Montreal Canadiens as the team announced they have lost former first round pick Noah Juulsen to the Florida Panthers after having placed the defenseman on waivers on Sunday. On Monday, the Canadiens did the same with recent signings in forwards Michael Frolik and Corey Perry.
Michael Frolik and Corey Perry were both signed to one-year, $750 000 contracts in the month of December. Most recently, Corey Perry was a part of the Dallas Stars team that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In Dallas, Perry played a depth role where he excelled at riling up his opponents whilst also having an impressive playoff performance.
Per Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, Corey Perry is a player general manager Marc Bergevin is a glad to have on his roster, citing Perry’s intangibles and his net-front presence. It would certainly then be in the general manager’s best interest that Perry clears waivers on Tuesday.
Likewise, Michael Frolik is an ideal 13th forward for a team when injury befalls them. A consistent presence on the PK, Frolik could complement a team looking to improve their two-way game.
Due to their cheap contracts and effectiveness in depth roles, there remains the possibility that the Montreal Canadiens lose one or both forwards to a team looking to add extra bodies.
We will know more on Tuesday at noon regarding whether or not both players cleared waivers. If either player clears, they will be sent to the Canadiens’s taxi squad, a reserve of players that practices with the team in the case of a player in the lineup testing positive for COVID-19.
