Ryan Poehling

The Montreal Canadiens drafted Ryan Poehling in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft after a low scoring freshman season with the St. Cloud State Huskies. Poehling had fast-tracked his high school studies so he could start college early and was one of the youngest players in the NCAA that season.

The Habs knew it would be a long term plan with Poehling. Following that freshman season where Poehling scored 13 points in 35 games, he was nearly a point per game player for the next two seasons. He scored 31 points in 36 games in consecutive seasons before signing his entry level contract with the Canadiens at the end of last season.

Of course, we all remember Poehling making his NHL debut in the Habs final game of last season. He scored a hat-trick in that game and added the shootout winner for good measure. He obviously wasn’t going to do that every game this season, but he did make it appear he was ready for the NHL level.

Poehling has struggled most of this season, whether at the NHL or AHL level. He had a strong showing at training camp but was injured with a concussion and missed the start of the season. He has split time between Montreal and Laval, but hasn’t produced much offence at either level.

Poehling played 27 games with the Habs this season, scoring just one goal and one assist. He also suited up for 36 games with the Rocket and had five goals and eight assists. A year ago, he looked like a terrific two-way player in the making. He is still just 21 years old so he can surely still get there, but his value is much lower at the end of this season than it was at the beginning.
