Marco Scandella

The Montreal Canadiens did extremely well with Marco Scandella. They acquired him for a fourth round draft pick from the Buffalo Sabres on January 2nd. Scandella played fine hockey for the Habs until he was flipped to the St. Louis Blues.

Just six weeks after acquiring him, Bergevin swapped Scandella to the St. Louis Blues for a second round pick in the upcoming draft and a conditional fourth round pick in 2021. The Blues would have to either make it to the Western Conference Final or re-sign Scandella before next season for the fourth to end up with Montreal in 2021.

It will be tough for St. Louis to get back to the Western Conference Final as they would likely need to get through the Dallas Stars, or Colorado Avalanche in the second round and maybe one of them in the first round as well if they don’t win the division. There is a decent chance he could re-sign with the Blues though as they are thinner on the left side than they are on the right.

Even if the fourth doesn’t end up in Montreal, Bergevin took a fourth round pick, used it to get Scandella and then let someone else have him for a second round pick. That’s like renting a hotel room for a week and then getting paid for staying there.

You couldn’t ask for much better asset management from a general manager than this. He filled a role short term and then increased the team’s draft position when they will be hosting the festivities in June.
