Could the Montreal Canadiens have an upcoming Mitch Marner situation?

There is an overwhelming belief that the reason the Mitch Marner contract has gone so awry in Toronto is because of his agent Darren Ferris. He’s not a player agent teams like dealing too much, and if you need proof, check out some of the names he has under his wing and think back to their respective contract disputes.

The Calgary Flames had issues with Gaudreau initially as he wanted money around the $8 million mark. Eventually, they settled on a $6.8 annual salary.

Kevin Papetti also brought up an interesting (and pretty funny) trend in the negotiations of Ferris agents. At some point, the threat of heading overseas comes up.

It happened with Bennett who was possibly going overseas, Athanasiou threatening to go to the KHL and with Anderson threatening to go to play in Switzerland and requesting a trade at some point. Heck, another reason why drafting Kotkaniemi was the better choice over Filip Zadina is because he’s a Ferris represented player as well.

But why does this have anything to do with the Montreal Canadiens? The Habs dodged a bullet with Zadina; however, they’ll still have to deal with Ferris starting next season. Why? Because Darren Ferris represents Victor Mete and with the 2016 fourth-round pick set to have his entry-level contract expire, Bergevin will have to dance with a big ball of frustration to get him signed.
