Who Turned on the Jets?

(You see because the Arizona Coyotoes used to be the Winnipeg Jets.)

I looked at Domi’s goal scoring during his rookie season in an article over the summer. Feel free to look at the full thing here, but these are some of the main points from it.

  1. Of Domi’s 18 goals, 14 were at even strength while 4 were on the power play.
  2. The goals came from either came from a rush of speed along the wall making a curving trajectory to the net OR sweet spots around the net during a flurry of chaos.
  3. Martin Hanzal was a factor playing the role of the ‘physical deflection’ on Domi’s line.

His offensive decline in the following two seasons is most likely a combination of a broken hand, the loss of linemates in Hanzal as well as the up and down play of Anthony Duclair, and plain bad luck. I’ll reiterate what I said back then, Hanzal wasn’t the only reason. However, the personnel on the Montreal Canadiens is giving Domi a lot more leeway to use his strengths offensively.

Jonathan Drouin has been his go-to guy on the left wing, but Artturi Lehkonen, Charles Hudon, and most recently Andrew Shaw are working well.

Domi has been hot at even strength with seven goals and is doing his part on the man advantage with three. But his speed in both his rush into the offensive zone and the quickness of his release have been a big part of his production so far.
