Montreal Canadiens HvL (S2E23): The goofiness of the NHL

The Montreal Canadiens may be accepting a tank, the Toronto Maple Leafs are finding their way and the NHL can’t get a call right as HvL.

George Parros being the Director of NHL Player Safety was a move a lot of fans were happy with. Last season had a lot of questionable suspensions, or non-suspensions, in a time where protecting players has never been more important, having someone who has been in those situations first-hand sounded like the best move.

However, there have been some odd decisions in terms of disciplinary action lately. Thankfully episode 23 opens with some audio on the thought process between Parros and former director Colin Campbell (0:00). The suspensions are just one of the inconsistencies in the league. All the offside and goaltender interference calls are giving fans something to talk about every night where no one knows what each of them are anymore, not even the boys of HvL (2:42). The same could go for the Leafs and Habs, more so in Montreal’s case. Sometimes they show up while other times they don’t, and it makes you wonder how the next few weeks we’ll play out for either team.

Shapiro took his rant to dive into the fact that the Leafs are still underachieving (16:22). There have been a lot of areas in the team that haven’t given what many fans that they would, especially Mitch Marner and William Nylander.

Rehman, on the other hand, doesn’t have too many questions. He knows what’s best for the Habs, and that’s to tank (18:20). However, he’s not fond of the narrative that tanking isn’t honourable or is for losers. Players aren’t going to go on the ice to drop games on purpose, but the older veteran players, such as Tomas Plekanec, need to go, and more youth has to be added.
