We have the final verdict from the Montreal Canadiens concerning Victor Mete, and he will be rejoining the team on Friday.

Well, this is a complete 180 of what was initially thought. As the days until the end of the World Juniors counted down, the future of Victor Mete was a hot topic. There was a strong belief that the Montreal Canadiens would decide to send him back to juniors and hopefully be named to Canada’s Winter Olympic team as there were scouts from Hockey Canada at the gold medal game.

However, the Habs have announced that the 19-year-old will be rejoining the team on Friday. According to the Montreal Canadiens NHL site, Marc Bergevin let Mete know that he will be rejoining the team for practice on the 12th in Brossard.

This is a little surprising to learn of. Not because Mete isn’t good enough to be on the team, but considering how the rest of the season will turn out for the Habs, many thought that they wouldn’t want him to be around it. On the other hand, with Shea Weber still out of the lineup, there could be an opportunity for Mete to be used more than he was before being loaned to the World Juniors.

More from Habs News

The 19-year-old put up four assists in 27 games with the Habs so far averaging 14:52. Mete’s return could be bad news for the likes of Joe Morrow who has continued to struggle with finding a level of consistency in the NHL. However, if Claude Julien is still committed to growing Morrow’s game, it could be Jakub Jerabek who gets the seat.

Personally, I think that would be a mistake, but considering Julien sat out Daniel Carr in place of Jacob de La Rose, anything is possible.
