Laval Rocket Weekend Recap: Splitsville With the Devils + Key Injury

The Laval Rocket had a rollercoaster of a weekend with the Binghamton Devils. It’s been some really high ups but some low downs as well.

It’s been a good time for Laval Rocket fans since the start of the regular season. The team has been fast and able to put the puck in the net in their sample of games. You could say that Place Bell has been rocking (see what I did there?).

Game One

Laval played another two games this weekend, both against the Binghamton Devils. There were a handful of season debuts as well. The highlight had to have been Daniel Carr. He along with Chris Terry had hat tricks in the team’s 8-7 overtime win. According to the AHL Communications Twitter account, it was the first time teammates both had a hat trick in a game since 2013.

David Schlemko was also down for a game after being send down for a conditioning stint. He made a slick first pass to Carr to send him on to score the overtime winner. Daniel Audette and Matt Taormina also found the back of the net.

It wasn’t a good game for Charlie Lindgren though. He was pulled after the sixth goal was allowed (.727 save percentage) and Zachary Fucale came in relief.

Game Two

Sunday’s game didn’t go in favour of the Laval Rocket losing 5-1. Unfortunately, it was the old Joker saying. An unstoppable force (Laval’s offence) met an immovable object (Scott Wedgewood). The Devils’ goaltender made 36 out of 37 saves. The one he didn’t make was thanks to Nikita Scherbak.

The former 2014 1st round pick has had a great start to his season. Before this game, he had put up five assists, including three in the 8-7 win. He scored in the first period to tie it at one. It was a great display of speed and skill from the 21-year-old.

More from Prospects

Unfortunately, it may be some time before fans see Scherbak again. He fell awkwardly into the boards during the third period and may have hurt his leg. We’ll have to wait and see what the update is on him, but hopefully whatever happened to him isn’t long-term.

Jakub Jerabek didn’t have that good of a performance though. It’ll be a small steak in the hearts of Habs fans who think the he should be on the team right now. His decision-making was questionable at times, and there were a lot of failed attempts to complete a pass to his teammates that led to chances against. However it’s only one game, and the first where he’s struggled this much.

The Laval Rocket are still off to a great start despite the loss. They currently have a 3-1 record placing them third in the North Division. It’ll be a great season for them if they can continue this pace.
