Habs Need Bill Guerin…

C’mon Carey…hurry up will ya?

Pierre Gauthier needs to know how much money he will have under the salary cap to poke and tinker under the hood of his 2010-11 edition of The Montreal Canadiens. I’m sure he does not want it to be a limited edition which it just might be in terms of tenure if he messes up.

A team player would sign for what he’s worth and allow his bosses enough money to be able to add players to the mix that will not only make the team better – but your job as well.

Bill Guerin is that player and he is looking for work. A free agent who skated with Pittsburgh last season ,he  has yet to sign a contract anywhere although Pittsburgh is said to be still in the mix. Whoever he signs with – the forty year old will take a considerable pay cut from the two million he was making last season with the Penguins yet what he may be missing salary wise – Bill sure makes up for in experience.

He is one of the highest scoring American born players in league history. He has scored 856 points in 1,263 regular season games and adding another 73 in 133 play-off games – he’s tough , he’s mean and has won two  Stanley Cups. Add all this to the fact that he descends from a New Jersey system, the very same system that raised current Habs Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez – it should be a no brainer for Gauthier to add him to the upcoming version of the Montreal squad.

Guerin will bring leadership and character to a team that already has improved leaps and bounds in that department with the additions last year of Moen, Gill, Spacek, Gionta and Gomez .Imagine the lessons he could and would instill in the younger Habs such as Eller, Boyd, Subban, Pyatt and Lapierre. If Jacques Martin decides to alternate him in the line-up with some of the youth – his experience around the team will only instill respect in the dressing room and ensure that the shenanigans that took place two seasons ago – will not happen again.

Bill Guerin is Bob Gainey’s type of player – let’s hope he is Pierre Gauthier ‘s as well.
