For much of his young professional career, patience has been the key theme surrounding David Reinbacher. But with his latest Laval Rocket performance, the conversation is shifting from development to opportunity.

David Reinbacher, a 21-year-old Austrian, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1st round of the 2023 draft (#5 overall). An impressive defenseman, standing at 6'3" and 209lbs, he has a great track record, playing for the Austria U18 and U20 international junior teams and putting up decent numbers playing for EHC Kloten, an elite Jr. hockey team in Switzerland.

Playing for EHC Kloten from U15 to U20, Reinbacher played 125 games, where he racked up an impressive 89 points and +16, great statistics for a defenseman. After being drafted, he was loaned to the Laval Rocket in the 2024-25 season, where he played 10 games for them, with 5 points, and is currently playing with them still.

After battling injuries in recent seasons, including a broken metacarpal earlier this year, Reinbacher's season did not start smoothly, with trying to get back into rhythm after returning to the lineup. Recently, his performance has taken a noticeable step forward, as fans and analysts are starting to reignite their interest in him.

Over the most recent 5 games the Rocket have played, Reinbacher has put up an impressive 6 points (1 goal and 5 assists) alongside a +6. These exceptional numbers illustrate both growing confidence and effectiveness at both ends of the ice. Producing offensively, while showing defensive reliability, he is currently making a great show of what enabled the Canadiens to choose him as a high draft pick.

Key Piece of the Canadien's Future
Envisioned as a future cornerstone on the right side of its blue line, Reinbacher has a great blend of size, mobility, and defensive awareness that makes him a modern two-way defender capable of playing great minutes. However, the Canadiens have been careful with his development, with injuries and the transition to North American hockey slowing his progression, making the AHL a crucial step before the jump to the NHL. It appears the patience may be paying off.

Call-up Discussion
While Reinbacher is on a bit of a hot streak, analysts argue that a short NHL stint could be a good consideration for the Canadiens to make.
- Evaluating NHL readiness: A late-season call-up would give the Canadiens a better sense of where Reinbacher stands against NHL competition
- Addressing defensive depth: His right-shot profile fills a natural organizational need on the blue line
- Confidence and development: Even a handful of NHL games could accelerate his growth heading into next season
At the same time, the decision isn't as straightforward, since Montreal is currently in a tight playoff race, which complicates the balance between development and winning now, the situation carrying both opportunity and risk

If his current trajectory continues, Reinbacher's long-awaited debut in the Canadiens sweater could arrive sooner than later!
