What’s up with Mesar?

Filip Mesar was drafted high, ahead of some guys that made Canadiens fans question the selection. And yet, he still isn't thriving as many think he should be.

The Montreal Canadiens Slovakian stockpile in the 2022 NHL Draft was a feel good story.

Juraj Slafkovsky was the big, power forward who had put together dominant stretches against professional-level competition. He was the near consensus pick for first overall and because of that, the pick wasn't too shocking. Since Slafkovsky has developed into the player the Habs hoped he would be.

But his countrymen and fellow first-round Habs selection Filip Mesar (26th overall) hasn't had the same path, it's been much different. Mesar played two seasons with the Kitchener Rangers, and he didn't do a whole lot to wow the Ontario Hockey League. Should he be written off and considered a bust? I don't think so.

But there has got to be some urgency from Mesar, to show off what he can do, because the expectations are high for a reason. He didn't choose to be drafted where he was, but he is a player who was worthy of a first-round selection. But it's been two years and the hope is that he can have a strong debut professional season and put any questions to rest.

Laval should help him aplenty

Mesar can skate, he has great vision and his hands are quick and tactful, with the puck he is a skilled handler. But the wow factor of his game comes in spurts and at times, his inconsistencies stand out. If he can iron those things out, he should be able to carve out a strong career in the NHL.

The Laval Rocket and new head coach Pascal Vincent are the perfect place for Mesar, who has high hopes of establishing himself as an important piece for the team. With work and some adjusting, Mesar should fit right in, and the growth should be some of the most fun to watch. Mesar is a talented player, but he leaves you wanting more, if he can improve on that, then he could be a nice surprise for the Habs, perhaps this season, in a pinch.

But the goal is for him to develop and become a player that the Canadiens can rely on for offence, but smart, efficient play as well. I have hopes that he can develop into a nice top-nine piece down the road for the Habs. And, if he can become a player who plays bigger than his stature, then he just might be a gem, it isn't too late, though everybody wants to see more sooner, not later.
