The Montreal Canadiens started their preseason slate with a dominating 5-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. It's important not to look too deep into preseason results, as the Flyers didn't ice the most competitive team. However, the performances of Lane Hutson and Oliver Kapanen had Habs fans buzzing on Tuesday morning. The preseason doesn't take time to dwell on past performances, as a new group will take the ice against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. The only player with a repeat appearance is Logan Mailloux.

Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky will try to pick up where they left off last season, and it all begins with the first preseason game. The trio will have some help this year, as they can depend on the second and third lines to generate offense and eliminate some of the burden. The added depth will cause opposing teams to focus on other areas instead of just the first line.

Joel Armia, Jake Evans, and Brendan Gallagher have been a valuable line so far in training camp practices. It's easy to see how they could become the team's fourth line, but Evans must make an impression after Oliver Kapanen's performance in game one. Evans could be the victim of losing his spot if Kapanen makes the team. Evans hopes he can solidify his spot and force the Canadiens to make a move with Christian Dvorak.

Owen Beck will also get a chance to make a good first impression. He is another player that could be sent to Laval if Kapanen makes the team. Beck thought he'd be the prospect who cracked the lineup out of camp, but it seems he's behind Kapanen right now. It's hard to see both players making the team out of camp.

David Reinbacher will get to do the same thing as Lane Hutson did in game one. Much like Beck and Kapanen, it's likely an either/or between Reinbacher and Mailloux for a right-shot defenseman roster spot. Both players could end up in Laval, but it'll be intriguing to see who plays better in this game. Mailloux looked solid in Monday's game but didn't do enough to guarantee a spot like Hutson may have done.
