Montreal Canadiens have trimmed their roster significantly
The youth will begin their second training camp in Laval on Tuesday.
It was an eventful night for the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday after their game with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Patrik Laine suffered another setback to his comeback when he was kneed by an AHL player from the Leafs, which looks like it could be a long-term injury. The Canadiens also lost David Reinbacher to a supposed knee injury, and the AHL-destined prospect could miss some development time with Laval.
The Canadiens didn't waste any time after the game getting their rosters set, as the Laval Rocket's training camp will begin on Tuesday, October 1. Montreal began training camp with 59 players, but trimmed that number down after sending 27 players to Laval.
The following 16 players were assigned to the Laval Rocket.
Forwards: Vincent Arseneau, Alex Beaucage, Laurent Dauphin, Israel Mianscum, Logan Nijhoff, Jakov Novak and Charles Savoie
Defense: Zackary Hayes, Joshua Jacobs, Chris Jandric, Simon Motew, Jacob Paquette, Vincent Sévigny and Tyler Wotherspoon
Goaltenders: Luke Cavallin and Hunter Jones
These players were training camp invites and other former draft picks who didn't have much hope of making the Canadiens roster but came to training camp for the experience and to fill out rosters for preseason games.
The Canadiens also assigned nine players who had an outside shot of making the team but couldn't put forth the kind of performance that gets players a surprise spot on the opening night roster. The players were Owen Beck, Jared Davidson, Sean Farrell, Riley Kidney, Filip Mesar, Jacob Perreault, Xavier Simoneau, Luke Tuch, Florian Xhekaj, William Trudeau and Connor Hughes.
There are no real surprising names on the list of playesr sent to Laval. None of these guys did enough to warrant a spot except for Owen Beck, but the unfortunate thing for him is that Oliver Kapanen just played better. It doesn't mean that Beck won't see time in the NHL this season, as he could be the next-man up if injuries or trades happen throughout the season.
