Lane Hutson acquainted himself with Florian Xhekaj
It's not as though anybody didn't know what Lane Hutson was all about, but he showed off his slick puck skills and skating at Habs rookie camp.
With Montreal Canadiens rookie camp among us, fans are getting their first glimpse of the Habs prospects all in one place.
This creates many storylines; such as - who might slot together in Laval, and who stands out from the rest ahead of Montreal's main camp. It is also a good measuring stick for prospects to see where they are developmentally against the other future Canadiens' hopefuls. But some stand out from the rest and burning guys at camp is about as surprising as winter is cold.
Lane Hutson is one of those examples because he is the likeliest to make the jump to the NHL full-time. Still, it's rather exciting to see Hutson's moves already in mid-season form, considering that the expectations both from the fanbase and himself are sky-high. With a bit of NHL experience from the end of last season, Hutson appears ready to take the league by storm.
The Lane train is loading
Hutson victimized Florian Xhekaj at Habs rookie camp, which isn't surprising since he has carved out a career of making the opposition miss. Xhekaj isn't a shutdown defensive forward, so it's not something to put a lot of thought into. But Xhekaj, at the very least now has an idea of the kind of things that Hutson and many of the league's top talents are capable of pulling off.
Now, back to Hutson, who looks like he is ready to explode for the Canadiens and provide them with a true number-one play driver on the blue line. There is no telling what his season might look like, but his fearless game provokes the thought that it should be a good season. One, that puts the league on notice, that his NCAA brilliance and short NHL stint weren't merely a flash in the pan.
For his first step of the way, Hutson will play in the rookie showcase against the Toronto Maple Leafs prospects on Saturday afternoon. Odds are that he is going to be a standout, but watching him navigate around the opposition will be the perfect way to get the Habs brass excited for what's ahead. Hopefully, a successful season, where he leap-frogs Mike Matheson and secures power play one duty.
