Ivan Demidov will add high impact element to impressive core
The Montreal Canadiens had been lacking a superstar, but Ivan Demidov is hoping to be the answer. A guy that oozes with pure skill, and will be the perfect complement to the Habs top six.
The Montreal Canadiens have added a future number-one goalie, stud defenseman and solid forwards to the prospect pipeline.
But up until the most recent draft, the Canadiens had been criticized for lacking a pure superstar talent to elevate the team to the next level. There are high hopes that Lane Hutson, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky can develop into that calibre of player. But the disappointment from the Habs opting for David Reinbacher instead of Matvei Michkov was loud and clear.
So, when general manager Kent Hughes was transparent about his love for Russian prospect Ivan Demidov after the club drafted him, fans took a deep breath. I mean, how could you not when you watch his highlight packages? Although it was in the Minor Hockey League (MHL) Demidov was dominant each time he touched the puck and he brings a different element to the Habs.
He then elevated his play to another level in the playoffs, which essentially cemented him as the Habs' pick, if he was available.
Demidov, another puzzle piece for the Habs top six
There isn't a prospect in the Canadiens brigade of young talents who has the potential that Demidov does. Even his skating is a style that is rarely seen, as discussed by Elite Prospects scout David St. Louis only Antonio Stranges and Brandt Clarke skate the ten-and-two style. It is a style that throws off defenders, but if it was just his skills then it might not be so effective, however, he has such a high hockey sense that will potentially elevate him to superstar status at the NHL level one day.
While he is more of a playmaker, his knowledge of gaps and soft areas is very advanced and should earn him plenty of scoring chances. Being viewed as one of the most talented players in the 2024 draft class didn't happen by mistake, there is a lot of nuance to his game. When you consider that each of the players likely to slot into the Canadiens top six will benefit from Demidov's skillset.
Demidov isn't viewed as an elite sniper but is revered more for his all-around game and his high compete level. So, while Michkov would have addressed a need in the organization, Demidov ticks off more boxes. But his work ethic is what makes him an intriguing player in Hughes and Jeff Gorton's eyes.
If Slafkovsky and Caufield continue their shooting ways, this will open up space, especially on the power play for guys like Nick Suzuki and Demidov, who can zip the puck past goalies.
