Hensler is the prototypical two-way defenseman. He likes to jump up in the play to create offense, and may not show much scoring touch, but he has above-average vision and creativity. Hensler is agile for a 6-foot-2 defenseman, which he uses to stick with elite skating forwards. He has a physical makeup to play in the NHL but needs a few years of development at the University of Wisconsin. He has plenty of raw talent, so it'd be a work in progress that the Canadiens can afford to wait for with their crop of defensemen.

Hensler had 48 points in 88 games combined with the USNTDP last season. He also starred with the USA U18 team at the World Under-18s, recording six points in seven games.
