Montreal Canadiens management has to be very impressed with their centre prospect depth, especially of late.
Owen Beck has stolen the spotlight of late after Oliver Kapanen was impressive during his time with the Canadiens. Back to Beck, however, who has been playing a mature game and adapting well to the American Hockey League, turned things up a notch on Saturday night. Beck was a huge presence all over the ice, leaving his prints all over the Rocket's 5-4 win over the Toronto Marlies.
Beck opened the third-period scoring, with his sixth goal of the campaign. Beck wasn't finished there though; and with 20 seconds left in the game, Beck snapped home a snipe in the slot. It was an impressive shot, but the poise and positioning were maybe a little more impressive.
The Peterborough, Ontario, native has five points in his last three games - with four out of five being goals. Before the season started I felt that the Canadiens were going to be very pleased with their centre situation in the future. But I can't say that I expected Beck and Kapanen to look as good as they have this fast.
With Michael Hage looking like a future top-six centre (at minimum), the Canadiens have three very strong centre's poised to take up a spot in the coming seasons. I think the days of Christian Dvorak might be coming to an end sooner than later. With Jake Evans shining, and Beck and Kapanen likely in the mix next season, I feel like Dvorak is the odd man out.
Is it time for a callup?
It's not a secret that Kirby Dach has struggled, and I think that it might be a good time for him to play in the bottom six. Now hear me out, because I understand that if he is supposed to be the second-line centre, he should play there. But if I'm being honest I think he needs to have some fun and simplifying his game to the x's and o's might be most helpful.
Now, how does a callup fit into the mix here - right? Well, I think Dach could and should be moved down the lineup. I think he should continue taking faceoffs, but having him as the secondary option will free him up and he can still take occasional draws. Then calling up Beck could be a reward for his strong play, while Dach allows a bottom six player to take a night off.
I hear the argument about sitting Dach, but I feel like it will do just as injury did - take away development time. Whereas in the bottom six, he is likely to create plays and play a bread and butter game, that will at the very least improve his defensive game. And if Beck plays well enough, maybe he fills in the second line role, freeing up Dach for the wing.
