Nick Suzuki gets his wish as Canadiens stand pat at NHL Trade Deadline

No help is coming; the Montreal Canadiens do not get any deals done at the NHL Trade Deadline.

After all the speculation, the Montreal Canadiens surprisingly made no moves at the NHL Trade Deadline. It was not due to a lack of interest, as the Canadiens' name was floated around numerous rumours, but nothing came to fruition. There was hope that they would be able to add one of the big names on the market, players like Robert Thomas, Steven Stamkos, or Nazem Kadri, but with the asking prices remaining high, the Canadiens ultimately chose not to pay an astronomical price to acquire another star.

Out of all the rumours the Canadiens were included in, a trade for Calgary Flames centre Kadri looked to be the closest to becoming a reality. Two hours before the deadline, NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that the Canadiens circled back on Kadri and were discussing a possible trade that included Patrik Laine. This comes a couple of days after Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette reported that the Flames had interest in Arber Xhekaj.

If the Canadiens were indeed willing to move Xhekaj, it would have to be because they would have been getting a defenceman in return. With the Flames already trading Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar, the Canadiens could have been looking at Zach Whitecloud. However, the trade talks quieted as the day went on, and an hour after the deadline had passed, a Kadri trade was made, but not to Montreal. The Colorado Avalanche stepped up and gave the Flames what they wanted.

While Canadiens fans will likely be upset that the team did not get any deals done, that can not be said for the players in the locker room. Captain Nick Suzuki said earlier in the week that he does not expect the team to make any “Big trades or small trades,” and that he really likes the group that is together right now. It had to be something GM Kent Hughes had to consider. A minor upgrade, while good on paper, could have done some damage to the team morale.

Instead of going all in this season, the Canadiens have chosen to stick to the plan, at least for now. It is obvious that the Canadiens were not willing to empty out their prospect cabinet to try and push for the Stanley Cup this season. The team will stay the course and not rush the process now. Their window to compete for Stanley Cups has just begun, and there was no need to make that window any smaller by trading away players like Michael Hage or David Reinbacher for a chance to win right now. The Canadiens' front office knows what they have, and they know what they do not, and it will be up to Martin St. Louis and staff to get the best out of the roster for the rest of the season.
