Since Cole Caufield joined the Montreal Canadiens full-time during the 2021-22 season, he has been paired almost exclusively with Nick Suzuki. Over the years, these two have become a dynamic duo, and it might result in a record-setting season for both in 2026-27 if Cole Caufield can score 61 goals, surpassing Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt, and Nick Suzuki can register 83 assists to break Peter Mahovlich's record.
Last season, Caufield would break 50 goals for the first time in his career and the first time a Canadiens player has done so since the 1989-90 season. Meanwhile, Nick Suzuki had a career season in assists with 72, and it was the first time a Canadiens player had done so since the 1979-80 season.
It is no surprise that these two players reached these marks playing together. Nick Suzuki can't get the assists he does without an elite goal-scorer like Caufield. The same is true for Caufield in that he doesn't have as many goals as he does without being set up by an elite passer like Suzuki.
Could Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield break single-season records for the Montreal Canadiens?
It makes sense that some of the best single-season performances in goals and assists usually happen in the same season. Peter Mahovlich set the franchise record in assists during the 1974-75 season with 82, and at the time, Guy Lafleur set the franchise record in goals with 53.
The goals record would be broken almost every season for a few consecutive seasons after that. During the 1976-77 season, Steve Shutt set a new franchise record for most goals in a season with 60. That same season, Guy Lafleur almost broke Mahovlich's record with 80 assists.
While Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield didn't break those records last season, they certainly got within reach to make it a discussion. Both players had incredible finishes to the season after hitting a lull in November and December.
If they are able to avoid that dip early in the season and maintain what they did over the final few months of the regular season, there isn't any reason that Caufield can't add nine goals to his season total and Nick Suzuki adds 10 assists.
While it may be surprising to see two single-season records fall at the same time, it logically makes sense. Especially when considering how much these two are on the ice together, and according to Natural Stat Trick, these two had over 1,375 minutes of ice time together. Meanwhile, Cole Caufield only had 97 minutes without Suzuki, while Suzuki only had 331 minutes without Caufield.
Both players had incredible seasons last year for the Montreal Canadiens but this upcoming one might be their best yet.
