The Montreal Canadiens are coming off a deflating overtime loss to the New York Islanders, where they lost the lead in the final two minutes of the third period before the Islanders scored the game-winner in the extra period. The Canadiens were able to open the scoring with Noah Dobson scoring the first goal of the game off an assist by defenseman Lane Hutson.
Hutson continues to have a breakout season on the offensive end for the Montreal Canadiens as he already set a career-high in goals with 10. He also is only 11 assists away from tying his career-high in that category as he has 49 through 58 games.
Lane Hutson Chasing History: Can He Eclipse Sergei Zubov and Cale Makar?
While Lane Hutson is chasing a personal best in the category, he is also chasing NHL history. Prior to the game on Thursday, TSN's StatsCentre noted that Hutson has a chance to do something never before seen in the NHL.
If Hutson is able to collect six assists over the next nine games (which is not five assists over the next eight), he will set an NHL record for assists by a defenseman in their first 150 career games. He would surpass New York Rangers' Sergei Zubov who has the record at 115 and Colorado Avalanche's Cale Makar who was three behind at 112.
Though he has discovered a goal scoring touch in his sophomore season (via 10 in 57 games), @CanadiensMTL defenceman Lane Hutson has been a supreme playmaker so far in his career. Entering tonight vs NYI with 110 assists, he needs 6 in his next 9 outings in order to top this list pic.twitter.com/QzTSRyrpLg

Hutson is playing in his second full-season at the NHL level and has only improved on a rookie season that saw him named first-team All-Rookie and win the Calder Trophy. He is a big part of what the Canadiens are able to do and why they are in the spot in the standings they are currently.
The Canadiens defenseman has been on an impressive run dating back to before the Olympic break as he now has at least one point in each of his past five games, including four assists during that stretch. He is going to need to keep this pace up if he hopes to secure the record but with the way he is playing right now, it is hard to see how he doesn't get it.
