On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets released their new-look uniforms ahead of the 2026 Heritage Classic, which will be played October 25 at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

The outdoor game has not been played in three seasons, as the Winter Classic and the Outdoor Series have taken over, but its return appears to be a welcome sight for fans.

While the Winter Classic sometimes features new sweaters never seen before in a vintage style, the Heritage Classic goes for a more traditional look, and it returns once again with Montreal's new sweater.

Rather than the pressing and stitching used on sweaters today, the classic Montreal uniform recalls the past with a wool-style collar and an off-white shade in place of standard white for a more vintage feel. The logo also borrows from the past, with a much thinner CH than today's fuller design.

The Jets' sweater is also a classic look, drawing heavily from the 1980s and 1990s styles the team has brought back in recent years. Although it isn't quite as new, it still looks sharp and should look good on October 25.

Montreal Canadiens have had mixed results in outdoor games

The game will be Montreal's fifth outdoor game in franchise history and its first since 2017, when the Habs were blanked 3-0 by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL100 Classic at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. Montreal holds a 2-2-0 all-time record in outdoor games. Its first win came in 2003 against the Edmonton Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium, a 4-3 victory in one of the coldest games in hockey history.

Since then, Montreal has dropped two of its last three outdoor games and been shut out twice, including a 4-0 loss to the Calgary Flames in the 2011 Heritage Classic. Its lone recent win came in the 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL's New England Patriots, where the Habs stunned the hometown Boston Bruins 5-1 and will need a similar performance on the road in Winnipeg.

The Jets have split their two outdoor games, starting with a 3-0 loss to the Oilers in the 2016 Heritage Classic, played in the same stadium that will host this year's game, then known as Investors Group Field.

At the home of the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Jets have yet to win on their home turf, and the Habs will look to extend the drought. Winnipeg did bounce back on the outdoor stage in the 2019 Heritage Classic with a 2-1 overtime win over the Calgary Flames.
