Kirby Dach hasn't looked great, but it's been four games

After missing an entire season, the rust has slowed Kirby Dach down. But with a little patience, he should be just fine.

The Montreal Canadiens had high hopes for Kirby Dach upon his return back to the ice for the 2024-25 season, but they expected it to be a slow start.

Naturally, they shouldn't expect it to be a seamless transition after missing an entire season. So, Dach's slow start isn't all that surprising, though I'm sure he would be the first to admit that he isn't keen on being a -4 through four games. Dach has taken 16 faceoffs this season, winning just four, which equals a win percentage of 18.8%

For a guy with prospects of being the club's second line centre, losing the role to Alex Newhook wasn't exactly in the cards. But it has been just four games, and Dach is a gamer, I expect for him to find his way. He hasn't looked totally up to speed, and his consistency has been staggered, but when he is on, the Habs are in a much better place.

Therapy day for Dach

Habs head coach Martin St. Louis was transparent, but coy with the media when they asked whether Dach will be in the lineup against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night; he said he didn't know. I would say it's pretty normal, unless there is an injury that nobody knows about; for Dach to take some time off. He is on the ice daily, after not being able to skate for 10 months plus.

You want all of your players to play every game and practice every day, but it is a long season and therapy days are all part of the process. For Dach to play at the top of his game, easing him in and letting him rest when needed will have to be considered. Is it concerning? yes, but only because there hasn't been much information released about his health.

The expectation for the Canadiens is to make the playoffs, so it's frustrating to think that Dach may be at risk of missing a game. But if a day off, during a non-game day is what is needed to ensure he does play, then I think it's all worth it. Health comes first and when Dach is healthy, it gives the Canadiens an offensive edge, he just needs a little patience.
