Jacob Fowler's AHL debut - expected to be Saturday against Syracuse

Jacob Fowler has had quite the week, going from the NCAA to Montreal, and practicing with the Habs, before practicing with the Laval Rocket. But it appears the date of his first, is close to confirmed.

Jacob Fowler is signed, and ready to play - new goaltending setup and all - and his debut date seems highly likely to be Saturday, April 12 against the Syracuse Crunch.

And so he did get the call between the pipes, and he was sensational in his AHL - and professional - debut, stopping 25 of 26 shots in a 2-1 win.

Fowler very obviously is a stud No. 1 goalie material prospect, and his performance put that on full display tonight. In my assessment, he was the first star, and Laval leaned on the rookie at times.

The pressure is what he welcomes, and I think that he and Cayden Primeau can lead the Rocket very deep into the AHL postseason.

Perhaps the kid from Florida can go on a ridiculous run, and turn some heads with Laval before his NHL debut, potentially next October.

Every game that he plays is the same thing - a dialled in six foot-two, 220-pound wall between the pipes - at every level. Boston College's top goaltender in the NCAA, the Mike Richter Award winner, Fowler does it all and is deserving of the spot he finds himself in.

The first win puck looks good, and it is the beginning of many, many wins for Fowler, who will make a nice duo with Jakub Dobes down the road for the Habs. First the playoffs are on his mind, and while Primeau is the starter, Fowler will strike if he slips.

If you watch him play, he has all the tendencies, and habits of successful NHL starters, who have had very long NHL careers. Guys that have Vezina Trophies, Stanley Cups and even Hart Trophies come to mind when I watch Fowler between the pipes.

I think Fowler could have played successfully in the AHL directly after he was drafted in 2022, but the two years in the NCAA paid off very well. He looked fantastic for the Boston College Eagles, and that came through with the Rocket in start one, I think that is going to become a trend quickly.

Primeau is definitely an admirer of Fowler, his backup, and his retrieval of the game puck was a very kind gesture.

It's the beginning of something beautiful, and on Monday night - Ivan Demidov will be another puzzle piece that falls into place for the Habs, and their future.

Montreal lost tonight and failed to clinch for the second game in a row, but Demidov's debut against the Chicago Blackhawks could be a fun game to try all over again.
