Depending on how some might look at the 2025-26 season for the Montreal Canadiens, it could be viewed as a success since they reached the Eastern Conference Finals or a failure with the way the team struggled in that series against the Carolina Hurricanes. However, for star forward Cole Caufield, he was very blunt and honest with his assessment of his performance in the playoffs.

On Monday, at the end of season press conferences, Caufield was asked how he maneuvers through a different style in the playoffs, where space is tougher to come by. In response to the question, Caufield said: "Honestly, I sucked, that's plain and simple. I want to be a lot better, and I expect a lot more out of myself, and my teammates and coaches do too."

Cole Caufield struggled to deliver the same impact in the playoffs that he had in the regular season

On the surface, Cole Caufield's stats weren't that bad in the playoffs as he had six goals and seven assists over 19 playoff games. However, upon closer examination of the numbers, it becomes clear why the forward felt the way he did.

Of the six goals, four were scored on the power play, and one of those goals came in Game 5 when the score was already 6-0, and the game was decided. He had his most success against the Sabres with three goals and two assists in seven games. However, in the more physical series, like against the Lightning and Hurricanes, he just wasn't able to get the space he normally would.

Caufield was dynamic in the regular season and finished with the second-most goals in the NHL with 51. He was also really good against the Hurricanes and Lightning with five goals in seven regular games.

There isn't any reason to panic yet about Cole Caufield, and this playoff run will help players like Caufield as they have gained invaluable experience. It was good to hear his honest assessment and he knows that he has to be better because the Montreal Canadiens are going to need Caufield if they want to go further in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the future.
