The Montreal Canadiens are a team that will have to make specific improvements on and off the ice in a manner that would define the team's outlook for the season, not to mention the playoffs during the spring.
There are important factors related to this team breaking out; however, disaster could strike, and the necessary changes needed would help the team (roster) mature more into a contending club that could dominate the first two rounds of a playoff series if tested.
In my opinion, this would give the team the best chances to improve and play the game of hockey to their respective advantage. Including coming clutch against high-percentage teams in general. The best outlook would have to include a bit more physical activity.
The five outlooks of the Montreal Canadiens improving
Dominating in the opposing teams neutral zone
The first outlook would be the dominance played in the offensive zone, taking charge of plays, especially against the boards. This aspect would give the Habs a distinct advantage in winning games.
Becoming undoubtedly more potent in the offensive zone would provide the Habs with a higher percentage of points in the standings and make them more dominant overall. It would surely give the goaltending added relief, allowing them to score more, and they need this to provide the team with more opportunities.
Scoring is going to be a big part of this team's arsenal and give the fans bang for their buck. Taking charge in and around the neutral zone with slick passing and scoring opportunities, challenging the opposing team's goaltending makes for the Habs.
Playing a relaxed but tight defensive game and contributing on the front
The defensive aspect of the Montreal Canadiens will be the most closely watched aspect of this team this upcoming season, due to the players assigned to that part of the game, which is loaded with veteran experience, fresh blood, and most importantly, talent.
This aspect would give the Canadiens a massive advantage in playing the game their way and present an opportunity for themselves to create more scoring chances. The way the defence executes its plays and takes charge will be the critical factor in determining the team's success.
The defence is the most important part of the team, which GM Kent Hughes has successfully assembled. This aspect will have to be led by head coach Martin St. Louis and his excellent demeanour towards defending on the ice.
Making certain tweaks to the team that may add-on a physical approach
The Canadiens roster squad is stacked with speed, skill, and dexterity. However, the physical approach, except on the defensive end, is somewhat worrisome and will need to be addressed. This aspect may give the Habs' roster a breath of fresh air and even become more dangerous than they are projected to be.
Certainly, this aspect would give the team more chances on the forecheck and give the star players a break from rugged plays themselves. It would certainly help the team compete more effectively and win battles on the ice and in other aspects of the game.
A physical approach characterizes the defensive game of the Montreal Canadiens, and the team's success may rely on that aspect. However, taking a closer look during the season may change management's mind, and they may pull the trigger to improve that outlook.
The coaching of Martin St. Louis
Martin St. Louis' coaching style will have to be on point in most games played. His approach and vision will be key for the team to succeed and play the game to their advantage. It would critically and certainly be the X-factor for the Canadiens' team's success.
His approach, as mentioned, will be the aspect that analysts will observe and carefully discuss during the 2025/26 season. The main reason is that St. Louis may be on the hot seat if the team defaults, as a contract year will determine if he is fit to lead.
His experience as a former NHL player, as well as his Stanley Cup Championship, will help the likes of Cole Caulfield and Nick Suzuki, addressing the team's needs. It is impeccable that the team performs under his direction.
What moves may GM Kent Hughes and management pull off
There may be a critical aspect that GM Kent Hughes and management are working on to improve the team's outlook and give the team an added level of confidence to play. Making the right move will provide the Habs squad and roster with that added touch of scoring.
Kent Hughes made big promises, stating that he would significantly commit fully to the roster, win games, and perform well during the postseason. His word is coming to fruition, and as a fan, I will have to see what other tricks he has up his sleeve.
This team is somewhat ready to compete, however, in my opinion, it is not yet fully prepared. Making certain moves by management might brighten the outlook of the Montreal Canadiens roster, not to mention the young prospects they have for the future who will take charge.
This team is ready to play, and as a fan, I am prepared to watch them win games and improve in the standings.
