When most hockey fans think of the University of Denver Pioneers, they likely picture the team’s recent championship run, led by standout defenseman Zeev Buium and head coach David Carle. Or perhaps they remember the unexpected loss to the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, an ACHA Division 1 team. However, one player who might not immediately come to mind is sophomore winger Sam Harris from San Diego—yet Montreal Canadiens fans should take notice.
In 2023, Harris was selected 133rd overall in the 5th round by the Canadiens. During his freshman season, he posted 21 points (14 goals, 7 assists) in 42 games. Denver also secured the college hockey championship in 2024, defeating Boston College and fellow Habs prospect Jacob Fowler.
This season, Harris has taken his game to new heights. With 23 points (15 goals, 8 assists) in just 25 games, he’s become a key contributor on the second line, helping propel Denver to a top-5 ranking in college hockey.
Denver has produced several NHL players, including Troy Terry, Jason Zucker, Bobby Brink, Danton Heinen, Logan O’Connor, and others. While it’s tough to directly compare Harris to these players, his progression is promising, indicating he could fill an important role at the next level.
One aspect that stands out in Harris’s development is his ability to improve year after year. As mentioned, he’s on pace for 34 points this season, up from 23 points as a freshman. Looking back at his time with the Sioux Falls Stampede, Harris reached the 35-point mark in his first season (60 games) and then became a point-per-game player in his second year, recording 56 points (30 goals, 26 assists) in 56 games. While it’s uncertain if he will continue that trajectory at the next level, it’s encouraging to see his consistent development at every stage.
With his winning pedigree and ability to learn and grow under David Carle, Harris’s potential is more promising than the Canadiens could have hoped when they selected him in 2023.
