The Montreal Canadiens are in the midst of a huge battle for a playoff spot in the tough Atlantic Division. Considering the amount of good teams in the division, the Canadiens have no room for error, and they need to keep stacking wins in this final stretch. It's good for them that they have a dynamic scorer in Cole Caufield, who made history on Tuesday night.
The Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins 3-2 in overtime, thanks in part to Caufield, who scored the deciding goal with just seconds remaining. This was Caufield's 40th goal of the season, and he is officially the first Canadiens player to accomplish this feat since Vincent Damphousse did so back in the 1993-94 season. A 32-year drought reached it's end on Tuesday.
After the game, Caufield was interviewed and was asked "what's next" after scoring 40 goals and if it was reaching 50 goals. Caufield joked that "41" goals is next for him.
"What's after 40? 50?"

Cole Caufield has hilarious quotes after breaking Canadiens' 40-goal scorer drought
With 15 games remaining in the Canadiens' regular season, 41 goals could certainly be next for Caufield, that's for sure.
The jokes from Caufield continued after the game. While speaking with a group of reporters, Caufield was asked if he knew that there hadn't been a Montreal player to score 40 goals in a season in 32 years. Caufield quipped "Yeah, you guys talk about it a lot."
For no one to score 40 goals in a single season in over three decades, it will be brought up a lot. The last player to get close to breaking the drought was Max Pacioretty, who scored 39 goals in 73 games in the 2013-14 season.
For those curious what the franchise record for most goals of the regular season is, that is 60, recorded by Guy Lafleur in 1977-78 and Steve Shutt in 1976-77.
With how Caufield started off the season with nine goals in the month of October and a 13 goal January, it felt inevitable that he would end the drought. With less than a month left in the regular season, Caufield notched the 40th goal. And he made sure it counted with a game-winning goal against a rival team who is jsut behind them in the standings for a playoff spot.
For the Canadiens, they sit in third place in the division with 84 points through 67 games. The Buffalo Sabres sit in first place with 90 points, while the Tampa Bay Lightning sit in second place with 86 points. The Bruins and Detroit Red Wings occupy the two Wild Card spots with 82 points each. Again, very little room for error for the Canadiens, especially with the Columbus Blue Jackets sitting outside of the picture at 81 points.
What Montreal can lean on is their scoring, as they are collectively one of the best in the NHL. Having Caufield helps with that. Caufield's career has really only just begun, and he has already set the tone that he can be one of the top players in the game.
