The Montreal Canadiens waltzed into practice on Monday with a fresh new look. TSN’s Kenzie Lalonde posted a video featuring new practice uniforms.

The description goes as follows:

  • Red helmets
  • White gloves
  • Red pants

When looking even deeper, there is also white piping down the pant legs. There’s a shield on the chest that features the classic team logo. On the pants, there is an all-white version of the logo.

There are red jerseys and white jerseys, naturally, but there are key differences. The red jersey has white numbers and white nameplates. The white jersey features blue numbers and blue nameplates.

Of course, this has led to some jokes online. There are definitely some Detroit Red Wings vibes going on. Some say the Carolina Hurricanes. I don’t see that as much.

Any time a new look comes out and it looks remotely like another team’s branding, it’s going to get some jokes. It happens.

Beyond that, some online were thinking a little deeper. Mayb, just maybe, this is a sneak speak at something in particular: The Hometown Remix.

The Hometown What?

This year, the NHL is unveiling a series of jerseys called the Hometown Remix. They're meant to be jerseys that reflect the city or region in which a team resides.

It's very similar to what MLB does with the City Connects and the NBA with the City Editions. It's meant to be an entirely new take on a uniform for a team.

For the Canadiens in particular, it gets difficult to figure out a new look. The reverse retros took out two ideas. One of those was a prominent blue jersey, and the other was a take on the Expos' old power blue jersey from the era of Gary Carter and Andre Dawson.

In theory, they could embrace the branding of Quebec, including the use of the fleur-de-lis. However, that comes with another issue. That leans into the Nordiques branding. They were an archrival of the Habs, and the Colorado Avalanche still use that branding frequently.

Lastly, the Canadiens have a brand that is deeply traditional. It's why the Yankees don't have a City Connect in baseball yet. It's hard to work around certain looks.

It may just be that a different take on the use of the traditional colors is all they can agree upon without being blasphemous. It's why essentially all jerseys this team has worn have been just some combination of three colors, with the exception of the Expos nod.

We'll see if this ends up truly being a hint at anything. This could just be something just for practices. It could also be what the Hometown Remixes look like. Neither would be shocking at all.
