The National League season in Switzerland has just begun, and one Montreal Canadiens prospect is off to a great start. Vinzenz Rohrer, Montreal’s 75th overall pick in 2022, has played most of his professional career in Switzerland. After two seasons with the Ottawa 67's in the OHL, Rohrer chose to play in the National League rather than make the move to the AHL. He signed his entry-level contract with the Canadiens in 2025, but was immediately loaned back to Zurich SC, the team he had played the previous two seasons with. After Rohrer’s season with Zurich was done, he finally made his debut for the Laval Rocket.
He played in the Rocket's final regular-season game, recording a goal and an assist in his debut. He appeared in all five of the Rocket's playoff games and recorded a single assist. The thought was that Rohrer would stay in Laval this season. However, he ultimately decided he would rather return to Switzerland, signing a three-year contract with Zug EV. Rohrer is not eligible to play for the Rocket during the duration of his contract, but can be recalled for the Canadiens at any time. So far, Rohrer's decision to return to the National League seems like the right call, as the 22-year-old winger is tied for the league lead in scoring.
Rohrer off to a hot start
Rohrer’s development in Switzerland has not been linear, but that largely has to do with playing for one of the top teams in the National League. Zurich won the National League championship in each of his first two seasons. Coming in as a 19-year-old, Rohrer played lower in the lineup, which affected his production. He recorded 19 points in 49 games in his first season, but improved those numbers the following year, as he recorded 25 points in 52 games. Last season, Rohrer’s production dipped, recording just 12 points in 41 games before joining the Rocket. The move to Zug allows Rohrer a chance to play higher up in the lineup, and so far it is paying off.
Zug finished eighth last season, losing in the quarterfinals, but they are off to a strong start this year. They are 2-0 to start the season, and Rohrer has been a big reason for their hot start. Playing on the same team as two former Canadiens players, Tomas Tatar and Raphael Diaz, Rohrer has been a catalyst for the team’s offence. In two games, Rohrer has two goals and four assists, forming a great partnership with Tatar. There are still plenty of games left to play, but Rohrer could not have gotten off to a better start.

Rohrer’s path to the NHL remains unclear. Remaining in Switzerland means the Canadiens do not get to watch him develop up close this season, but playing a larger role with Zug could be to his benefit. If he continues to produce at his current pace, he will definitely be a player to keep an eye on for training camp next year.
