The Montreal Canadiens had the Buffalo Sabres on the ropes after defeating them soundly in back-to-back games. Game 4 was perhaps the most chaotic of the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs due to what took place. Obviously, there was the Jack Hughes goal that was disallowed in the first period after two lengthy reviews. Even though that helped the Canadiens erase an early 2-0 deficit.
But later in the game, the Canadiens witnessed an absurd goal that they gave up on unusual circumstances. While on the penalty kill, the Canadiens watched as Sabres star Tage Thompson dumped the puck into their zone. The puck careened off of the stanchion where the Zamboni enters the ice at Bell Centre, and into the back of the net past goalie Jakub Dobes.

The goal did ultimately make a difference in the end result, as the Canadiens lost 3-2, and the series is now tied at two games apiece. After the game, multiple players on Montreal could not believe that the puck bounced off of the stanchion and off of Dobes to reach the back of the net.
Canadiens sound off on unlucky goal allowed in Game 4
“I thought we played well enough to win,” said Nick Suzuki, h/t NHL.com's Mike Zeisberger. “Then came an unlucky bounce in the second…”
These Stanley Cup Playoffs have seen some flukey goals scored, notably during the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins first round series. But this goal scored in the second round may top them all in terms of absurdity.
Suzuki wasn't the only player to comment on it, as defenseman Kaiden Guhle couldn't believe it.
“I heard the crowd and it was just like ‘Here we go again,’" said Guhle.
This was a surprise, considering that Dobes has been on fire during these playoffs, especially in the series against the Sabres. Even though Dobes stopped 19-of-22 shots faced, the Thompson goal is the one he would undoubtedly like to have back. Through the 11 games, Dobes has a .914 save percentage and a 2.22 goals allowed average.
This will be a play that sticks with the Canadiens, but luckily for them, Game 5 takes place on Thursday night, so it gives them the chance to turn the page on Game 4. The team's play has gotten better, and hopefully, an error-filled Game 4 won't ruin their chances.
But maybe, the Bell Centre should do something about that stanchion in the offseason, given that this isn't the first time its happened.
