The Montreal Canadiens were playing their sixth home game in the past seven games and were hoping to keep the momentum going after winning their last three at home. It certainly looked like they were on track to do so against the San Jose Sharks, but once again they struggled in the third period. This time, they were unable to pull out the overtime winner and lost 4-3.

The Sharks would get out to an early 1-0 lead, but then the Montreal Canadiens seemingly took control with three straight goals to build a 3-1 lead. However, the scoring would end there, and the Sharks had their own three-goal run, with two in the third period and then the game-winner in overtime.

While the Canadiens did get at least one point, this is one of those games that they let slip away as they were in control for most of it. These are five takeaways for the Montreal Canadiens from the 4-3 overtime loss.

Disastrous turnover by Jake Evans gives Sharks first goal of the game

The game certainly didn't start out well for the Montreal Canadiens as they fell behind 1-0 early in the first period. It was a play that Jake Evans will want to forget as it was a horrible turnover and a turnover that went to the worst possible player.

Evans was in his own zone and tried to cross it across the ice instead of just clearing it. However, he didn't get enough on it, and Macklin Celebrini picked it up right in the middle and walked right in for an easy goal on Jakub Dobes,

It has been a tough start to the season for Evans, who is still looking for his first point of the season and has a +/- of -5.

Early candidate for goal of the season by Juraj Slafkovsky

Early in the second period, the Montreal Canadiens were able to get a 2-1 lead thanks to Juraj Slafkovsky, who seemingly did it all by himself. It was an incredible goal that is probably going to be viewed as one of the best by any player on the Montreal Canadiens all season.

Slafkovsky brought the puck into the zone, chipped it around Darnell Nurse, regained control, carried it in front and across the crease to beat Alex Nedejkovic for the goal.

The Canadiens forward has gotten off to a slow start as this was only his second goal of the season and first since the game against the Carolina Hurricanes. A goal like this can help build momentum for him and maybe get him back on pace to being a 30-goal scorer like he was last season.

Canadiens top line with a great performance collectively

Slafkovsky's goal was certainly the highlight, but the Canadiens' top line was incredible in this game against the Sharks through the first two periods. The trio of Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield each had one goal and one assist.

When the Canadiens were playing some of their best hockey in the second half of the season, it was this trio that was a major reason for the success. They weren't able to get the win on Tuesday but if these three keep playing like this, the Canadiens are going to win more than they lose.

Canadiens give up another two goal lead in the third period

The third period continues to be ugly for the Montreal Canadiens as they blew another two-goal lead. On Tuesday night, the Canadiens had built a 3-1 lead by the end of the second period, but Michael Misa would score about five minutes into the third period to make it a one-goal game.

Then the Sharks would tie the game up later in the period with Tyler Toffoli scoring on a power play, and the Canadiens would see their lead disappear. Unfortunately for them, they weren't really able to generate much in terms of chances to get the lead back and finished the period with only six scoring chances after having 23 in the first two periods.

This is nothing new for the Montreal Canadiens but they have been fortunate enough to get the win either in overtime or in a shootout. It hasn't really cost them before tonight and is something that Martin St. Louis will have to address.

Jakub Dobes with horrible mistake in overtime

While the Canadiens have been known to blow third-period leads, they also have been pretty good in overtime, winning their last three games with an extra period. They weren't able to do that on Tuesday night, and it was due in large part to a horrible decision by Jakub Dobes.

The Canadiens goalie would be called for interference in the overtime period when a San Jose Sharks player skated in front of him while the Canadiens had the puck behind the net. It was an unnecessary play by Dobes, and the Sharks would end up with a power play and convert for the second time in the game with the man advantage.

There are a lot of questions about the goalie position as Jacob Fowler has been playing really well and a mistake like this by Dobes is enough for Martin St. Louis to go back to the rookie for their next game on Friday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
