The Montreal Canadiens came out of their latest bout with the Detroit Red Wings with a win in the shootout on Saturday night. For a low-scoring 1-0 game, you’d think this was a slow night.
That was far from the case. If you were there, you would likely beg to differ on that notion.
Here are three reasons why the win was absolutely unforgettable.
“We want Larkin”
Usually, when you hear a we-want chant, it’s when fans are chanting for their favorite team to face a really good opponent that could be pending. This time around, it’s a reference to trade rumors, which have been a headache for Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings for months.
He was booed by his fans in Detroit, and now in another Original Six’s barn, they’re chanting that they want him. After the game, Larkin himself said he took it in stride, even complimenting the Montreal crowd.
“It was interesting,” he said, via Sportsnet’s Eric Engels. “I never would’ve imagined that in this building in my career. But they’re passionate fans. In my opinion, it’s the best atmosphere in hockey, and they’re knowledgeable, and they love their team, and that’s how I read into it. And after a few seconds, it was just back to focusing on the game.”
The irony is that Larkin doesn’t have the Habs on his trade list right now. However, reports say the team is interested. Perhaps a moment like this gets him thinking, or he sees this as trolling on the down low and moves on.
Look, Chris Kreider is now on the team. Anything is possible.
The hot dog is on the ice
The Canadiens might be one of the most fitting teams to give this latest trend a go. Very few things are as iconic about the team’s lore as the top-sliced hot dogs, dating back to the golden years at the Montreal Forum. How about a big inflated one?
Ok, so for some extra context, there is a fan experience trend where fans try to get a big inflatable hot dog inside a big inflatable bun. Many teams have done it. This one includes “Go Habs Go” on the side of the wiener and the team logo on the bun.
However, everything went awry in the funniest way. The wiener went onto the ice, barely dodging one of the workers clearing it for use.

Shortly after, the bun was tossed onto the ice, too, being sent just over the team’s bench.
With the night getting weird already with the chants, why not add a hot dog onto the ice?
Zachary Buldoc gets last laugh after series of waived goals
Don’t worry, the oddities of the night were in-game as well. The Canadiens won the game in the shootout, but the officials did them no favors along the way.
The first one was denied to Cole Caufield, but after that, the story falls most on Zachary Buldoc.
One of them was even an overtime goal that was called off when Buldoc was deemed offside, costing Alexandre Texier the game-winner. Go figure. Buldoc had already had a goal taken away for goalie interference in the second period, too. He was having too good a start to the year, it seems.

In the shootout, Buldoc finally got one in the net that couldn’t be denied. Fowler got the shutout, giving them time to reach this moment and win the game.

On and off the ice, this game couldn’t have been any weirder for the teams involved. That being said, if you played in it or attended it as a fan, you’re likely going to remember this game for a while. So, pat yourself on the back for timing your trip to the Bell Centre. You didn’t know you were timing things out, but credit where it’s due anyway.
